Circle Square is a 5” by 5” drum leaf book about two lonely shapes who find company in each other.
Making of a Full Circle
The Making of a Full Circle is a collaboratively designed and editioned book that recounts the history of the University of Michigan as it relates to the late Penny W. Stamps, benefactor and namesake of the School of Art & Design. The book takes on the colors of the university and is housed in a matching clamshell box.
Three editioned copies of this book were created in 2018 in collaboration with Barbara Brown. The copies are now spread between Penny Stamps family, the School of Art & Design offices, and the Duderstadt library.
Paradise is a wire-edge book that takes the form of two fold-flat dice, which sit comfortably in a custom box. The dice are reversible and held together by brass rods which sit in a recess beneath the flattened dice.
In late 2018, Paradise was exhibited in Beyond Words: a Celebration of Book Arts at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.
The Viewer Doodad is an object of unknown origin that practically begs the user to investigate mystery in the playful, and to play in the mysterious. The “Viewer-Doodad” contains chaotically ordered conundrae, oddly familiar symbology that invites viewers to look for potentially profound purpose which may or may not be there. Reported side effects include sweaty palms, mild puzzlement, unsatisfactory answers, swelling of the question glands, and an unshakably singular experience that the viewer may sadly never replicate. Side effects will very well vary.
This piece was made as a collaboration with Ben Bertin in 2018 for Beyond Words: a Celebration of Book Arts at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.
Dorothy & Otis Shepard
This series of publications was developed and produced based on the works of Dorothy and Otis Shepard. The poster, brochure, facade, and invitation all reference a fictitious exhibition of the designers' work and the catalogue outlines the history of their work with text and images*.
I referenced Norman Hathaway & Dan Nadel's book, Designing the American Dream to gain access to much of the information and many of the images.
*All illustrations are the work of 20th century designers Dorothy & Otis Shepard.
Driftwood Hands is a flag book that opens to reveal an illustration of a hybrid log & hand. The book’s design is meant to reflect a beach.
